Kiliani
Kiliani is the name day of St. Kilian , which is celebrated on July 8th . Kilian was an Irish itinerant bishop, who in the year 686 with his companions Kolonat and Totnan the Christianity in the area of Würzburg brought. Around the year 689 the three missionaries were martyred .
On the day of remembrance of St. Kilian, the patron saint of Franconia , the relics , which are attributed to the martyrs and are kept in the Kilians crypt of the Neumünster Church, are transferred to the Kilians Cathedral by the Würzburg bishop .
The Kiliani octave (or Kiliansoktav ) is celebrated in Würzburg for eight days with church services, pilgrimages and activities. Traditionally, the population, especially the rural population, used the opportunity to go to the Kiliani sales fair on the market square after the Kiliani pilgrimage and a visit to the cathedral. The sales fair took place on the Juliuspromenade until around 1970. At the same time, the Kiliani fair is celebrated as a two-week fair with a wide variety of rides, beer tents and the like on the Talavera. The folk festival was approved by Emperor Konrad II for the people of Würzburg , since then it has had a permanent place in social life in Würzburg and attracts up to a million visitors every year. The sales fair dates back to 1030.
Many Francs in the Würzburg area understand Kiliani to mean the fair only; For many Würzburg children, the word "Kiliani" is even a generic name for all annual fairs.
