This list of nature parks in Austria lists the nature parks in Austria .

There are currently 48 nature parks in Austria with a total area of ​​around 500,000 hectares (as of 2015). They are visited by almost 20 million people every year.

The Austrian nature parks have four functions to fulfill: protection, recreation, education and regional development. The challenge - and at the same time important in terms of differentiation from other regions - is to develop these functions on an equal footing with one another.

Protection : The aim isto securethe natural area in its diversity and beautythrough sustainable use andto preserve the cultural landscape that has beenshaped by centuriesthrough:

• Gentle mobility
• Protected area management
• Research projects
• Contract nature conservation

Recreation : The aim is to offer attractive and well-kept recreational facilities in accordance with the nature reserve and the character of the landscape through:

• Hiking trails
• Bike and riding trails
• Rest and resting places
• Adventure playgrounds close to nature
• Family friendliness and accessibility
• Healthy air and calm

Education : The aim is to make nature, culture and their interrelationships tangible through interactive forms of understanding and experiencing nature in the sense of education for sustainable development:

• Themed trails
• Adventure tours
• Information centers
• Information materials
• Nature park schools and kindergartens
• Target group-specific offers
• Seminars, courses, exhibitions
• Customs care

Regional development : The aim is to set impulses for regional development through the nature park in order to increase added value and secure the quality of life of the population through:

• Cooperation between nature conservation, agriculture, tourism, trade and culture
• Jobs through nature parks
• Socially and environmentally compatible tourism
• Nature park products according to defined criteria
• Nature park restaurants

The main features of these goals were also adopted in the European Nature Park Declaration  (2013), together with Europarc , and ensure the function as a model region. This brings the nature parks beyond a pure natural attraction and development measure into the vicinity of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere program.

Association of Nature Parks in Austria

In 1995 all Austrian nature parks joined together to form the Association of Nature Parks of Austria  (VNÖ) as a common interest group. Since then, under the umbrella of this association, the nature parks have been developing together into model regions for sustainable development. The most important objective of the association is an Austria-wide coordinated further development of the nature park idea.

The main tasks of the VNÖ are:

• Representation of the Austrian nature parks
• Implementation of joint marketing activities
• Establishment of an information point for general inquiries and for the press
• Organization of various events
• Implementation of further training and qualification measures
• Implementation of employment projects
• Implementation of model projects
• Establishment of national and international cooperation

Of the 48 nature parks in Austria:

• 22 on Lower Austria
• 7 to Styria
• 6 to Burgenland
• 5 in Tyrol
• 3 each in Upper Austria and Salzburg
• and 2 on Carinthia

At 727 km², the Karwendel Nature Park is the largest nature park in Austria, while the Falkenstein Nature Park covers just 17 hectares (0.17 km²).
