Kauns is a municipality with 504 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Landeck district in the state of Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is part of the Landeck judicial district .

geography

Kauns is located at the confluence of the Kaunertal from the Ötztal Alps into the upper Inn valley above Prutz .

From the basin with the Faggenbach , the municipality extends along the mountainside to the neighboring municipality of Kaunerberg and includes part of the front Kaunertal.

The place is located at the foot of the mighty Kaunergrat and is a member of the Kaunergrat Nature Park Association . The nature park maintains a protection area for the ancient bee "Braunelle" on an area of 7,700 hectares. This rare species of bee is particularly characterized by its resistance to the cold winter in the mountains. Of 1000 peoples resident in Austria, 400 currently (2015) live in Kauns in the Kaunergrat protected area.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In silver a green tinned angle shield head and a black bear growing out of the green curved shield base."

The battlements in the coat of arms are reminiscent of Berneck Castle, converging in a triangle. The name has been interpreted as "Bäreneck" among the people. Therefore, the Lords of Berneck had a bear in their coat of arms in the Middle Ages. The green base of the shield symbolizes the Romanic place name Kauns, which translates as "Mulde" or "Wiege".

history

The first written mention of the place as "Chunes" dates back to the year 1120. From 1749 Kauns was run as an independent tax municipality.

The Bernegg Castle (also Berneck ) is located east of the village center at the edge of a 130 m to Faggenbach rock face and is a built in 1200 castle. The German King and later Emperor Maximilian I bought it in 1501 as a base for chamois and ibex hunting in the surrounding areas. The completely dilapidated facility has been restored true to the original since 1976 and can be viewed.

Kauns was originally part of the judicial district of Ried in Tirol and after its dissolution in 1978 it became part of the judicial district of Landeck.
