history
In the Middle Ages, the village gained a certain importance due to its location on the east-west traffic route over the Arlberg Pass . In addition, mule tracks led from here into the Lech Valley and towards the Engadine . Pettneu was first mentioned around 1300 as “Pudnew”, which is probably derived from ponte novu or punt nou (“new bridge”). The new bridge, which was preserved until 2005, came from the late 18th century and was an example of the covered wooden bridges without iron connectors that were common in the past . The bridge was swept away by the floods of the Rosanna during a flood on August 23, 2005 .
Today, in addition to agriculture, tourism is economically important. Pettneu positions itself as a family-friendly alternative to the nearby winter sports resort of St. Anton am Arlberg .
