geography

Schnann is located in the Stanzer Valley between Landeck and the Arlberg at an altitude of 1186  m above sea level. A. The village stands on an imposing cone of rubble that has been built up over the centuries by mudslides from the stream of the Schnanner Klamm.

history

The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1275. The name 'Schnann' is derived from a Rhaeto-Romanic name for 'forest bare'.

In 1646 the first version of the church was completed and consecrated. In the following centuries this was constantly expanded and renovated. In 1818 the place already had 28 houses (all of which were farms including two inns). Since then the village has grown approximately three times. (for comparison: currently 15 active farms and an inn).

The place gained great fame shortly after the Second World War, when gold was buried there by the National Socialists from Hungary. This was noticed by some local residents. The events from this brought the small village the surname "The Golden City". This was followed by film adaptations and a play.

In recent years, an industrial park consisting of seven companies has been created south of the town. The first pillar of the economy for almost all residents and businesses is winter tourism.

special locations

The Schnanner Gorge, both a sight and a climbing garden, is located north of the village.

The Gauderkopf ( 2991  m ) ( Hoher Riffler ) and its imposing north face look down on the village from the south.

At over 500 meters, the wall is the highest unclimbed north face in the Alps to date.
