Martin Burger (born July 15, 1939 in Pettneu am Arlberg ) is a former Austrian ski racer . The giant slalom and slalom specialist won several international races in the first half of the 1960s and was two-time Austrian champion . At the World Ski Championships in 1962 , he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom.

Career

Burger started skiing at the age of four, came to the ski club in his home town as a schoolboy and developed into a strong runner in the technical disciplines. In the winter of 1960 he achieved the first noteworthy results when he came second in the giant slaloms in Seefeld and on the Stilfserjoch , and third in Innsbruck and Hochsölden . In the next winter he was able to celebrate numerous victories. He won four giant slaloms in Saalfelden , Arosa , Innsbruck and on the Axamer Lizum as well as the slalom in St. Ulrich. At the prestigious Arlberg-Kandahar races in Mürren he finished second in slalom and in Lienz he was Austrian champion in giant slalom.

In the winter of 1962, Burger won the downhill run in Saalbach-Hinterglemm , achieved several podium places and became Austrian giant slalom champion for the second time. At the 1962 World Championships in Chamonix , he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom behind his teammates Egon Zimmermann and Karl Schranz . In the 1962/63 season, the Tyrolean won the slalom in Oslo and the giant slalom in Hindelang . As in the previous year, he finished second in the Wengen slalom . However, the winter of 1964 was very disappointing. Only in the slalom of Spittal an der Drau and the giant slalom of Innsbruck did he reach third place and he failed because of the team's internal qualification for the Olympic Winter Games . In the 1964/65 season, Burger was only used in less crowded races. Although he was able to win the giant slalom and the combined in Mariazell and the slalom in Vall de Núria , but ended his career after the season.

In the summer of 1965 Burger was a ski instructor in the Chilean Portillo , where the former Olympic champion Othmar Schneider ran a ski school. In winter he was in Boyne Mountain in the US -Bundesstaat Michigan also worked as a ski instructor. In the 1970s, Burger briefly coached the British women's team and then the brothers Phil and Steve Mahre .
