Sebastian Stöckl (born August 16, 1752 in Pettneu am Arlberg as Franz Rochus Stöckl ; † November 10, 1819 in Stams ) was abbot of the Stams monastery from 1790 to 1819 .

Life

Franz Rochus Stöckl attended the Jesuit grammar school in Hall and entered the Cistercian monastery in Stams in 1770 under the religious name Sebastian (at the same time as the composer Stefan Paluselli ). After studying at the monastery home school, he was ordained a priest in Trento in 1775 . After he had acquired his state teaching qualification in 1778, he worked as a theology professor in Stams until Emperor Joseph II banned the monasteries from studying. In 1785 he took over the former Augustinian parish in Seefeld and the management of the property belonging to it. In 1790 he was elected abbot of the Stams monastery, which although it suffered from the reforms of Josephinism , was not repealed. It was only during the time of the Bavarian interregnum (1806-1814) that it was placed under state administration, which amounted to a repeal. After Tyrol was returned to Austria in 1816, Stöckl was able to restore the monastery, but was already so sick that he died a few years later.

As a member of the regional parliament in Bozen , Stöckl initiated the pledge of the state of Tyrol to the “ Sacred Heart of Jesus ” in 1796 . This initiative resulted in the Sacred Heart Festival, which still plays an important role in Tyrolean popular piety today.

Commemoration

In the municipal coat of arms of Pettneu am Arlberg, awarded in 1991, a heart commemorates the son of the community as the founder of the Sacred Heart. In 2008, the Pettneu rifle company decided to add "Abbot Sebastian Stöckl" to the name.
