Augustine Handle
Augustin Handle OCist (born November 9, 1774 in Hall in Tirol as Franz Vigil Handle ; † February 12, 1839 in Innsbruck ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Stams from 1820 to 1839.
Life
Augustin Handle was the son of a trader from Stams . He was born in Hall in Tirol, where his mother had accompanied his father on a business trip. At an early age he was accepted into the Knabenkonvikt founded by Abbot Vigilius Kranicher, and then finished his education at public schools in Bolzano and Innsbruck .
After studying at university, he entered the Stams monastery in 1794 and shortly after his ordination became a lecturer in dogmatics , morality , pastoral theology and canon law at the home school . In 1806 he became novice master and the following year prior. After the monastery was abolished by the Bavarian occupation in 1807, he went to Burgeis in Val Venosta as pastor in 1809 , and in 1811 - with simultaneous appointment to the prince-bishop consistorial council - as dean to Mals . After the restoration of the monastery in 1816 returned to Stams, he was elected abbot in June 1820 after the death of his predecessor Sebastian Stöckl in the first ballot.
Abbot Augustin is considered to be the restorer of the monastery and monastic discipline . To this end, he contacted the Abbot General Sisto Benigni in Rome , who appointed him vicar and gave him powers . One of his first official acts was the establishment of a school to prepare boys for high school. He introduced the public case conferences and had several Stams Cistercians study at the University of Innsbruck in order to attract teachers for the theological in-house study of the monastery. He put the monastery’s financial situation in order, which had been shattered by the nine-year suspension, and increased the monastery library considerably, v. a. with more recent works, was a member of the Tyrolean parliament and general director of the grammar schools in Tyrol.
Abbot Augustin Handle died after a long illness on February 12, 1839 during a stay in Innsbruck.
