The yellow-shouldered wida or yellow-shouldered weaver ( Euplectes macrourus ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of fire weavers ( Euplectes ).
features
The yellow-shouldered wida is 14-19 cm tall and 22-29 g in weight, the female is somewhat smaller and lighter. The male in breeding plumage a long tail and striking black and gold yellow plumage is otherwise black. The coat is golden yellow in the nominate shape, the shoulders are yellow in all shapes.
In the plain dress , like females and young animals, it has an ocher-brown color with dark stripes on the back, light gray belly and light yellow-brown stripes above the eyes.
distribution and habitat
Yellow-shouldered widas are widespread in tropical and subtropical wet grasslands, marshland with trees or bushes and on rice fields in Africa .
The following subspecies can be distinguished:
- E. m. conradsi ( Berger , 1908), - in northwestern Tanzania , on the Ukereweinsel in Lake Victoria
- E. m. macroura ( Gmelin , 1789), - nominate form, in Senegal , Gambia , Guinea-Bissau , Guinea , Sierra Leone , Liberia , Ivory Coast , in the extreme south of Mali , in Burkina Faso , in the extreme south-west of Niger , in Ghana , Togo , Benin and Nigeria
- E. m. macrocercus ( MHC Lichtenstein , 1823), - In the highlands of Eritrea and Ethiopia as well as in Kenya and Uganda
nutrition
Yellow-shouldered wida feed mainly on seeds, especially sour grass plants , also grass seeds.
Reproduction
The breeding season in Sierra Leone and Liberia is between September and November, in Ghana between June and August, in Benin between June and November and in Burkina Faso between August and September.
Hazardous situation
The yellow-shouldered wida is not considered endangered ( least concern ).
