Tösens is a municipality with 756 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Landeck in the state of Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is part of the Landeck judicial district .

geography

Tösens is located at a narrow point in the Upper Court , the uppermost section of the Tyrolean Inn Valley . In addition to the elongated village, the settlement area also includes a few hamlets in the valley area and on the slope.

history

In the 15th century ore rock was mined for the extraction of silver , galena and barite . The mines in the Platzertal , which are among the highest located mines in the Alps, had to be shut down temporarily due to glacier growth and in 1910 due to a lack of profitability. Tösens was originally part of the Ried judicial district in Tyrol and became part of the Landeck judicial district after the Ried judicial district was dissolved in 1978.

  • A small ravine opposite the village is spanned by the Roman bridge, which actually dates from the Middle Ages, but was built using traditional Roman techniques and is probably the oldest surviving bridge in Tyrol.
  • Above Tösens at an altitude of 1104 meters in the municipality of Serfaus there is the Romanesque branch church of St. Georg ob Tösens , which was expanded in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century and was completely painted inside.

tourism

The Tösens gorge is the destination of the rafting boats that start from Pfunds . Together with Tobadill, Tösens is one of the financially weakest communities in the district.

Tösens is on the long-distance cycle path , which runs as the Via Claudia Augusta along an ancient Roman road of the same name .

Facilities

The Tösens volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1919. Since then, the Tösens fire brigade has had eight different commanders. Ferdinand Huter was the first in command and also a founding member. He led the fire department until 1930.

Power plant project

In the Platzertal above Tösens, TIWAG is planning to build a dam to expand the Gepatsch storage facility into a pumped storage power plant .
