Characteristic

  • Hill country made of sandstone with high rainfall between 800 and 1000 meters above sea level.
  • The forest area of the hilltop areas is predominantly wooded with closed spruce forests . These forests are managed by clear cutting . The remaining forests have a higher proportion of hardwood , but near-natural forests are rare. The forests are closely interlinked with the surrounding landscape.
  • There are numerous streams that are often blocked in the lower reaches. The Aurach is used economically. The streams are lined with near-natural gallery forests. There are also small, often temporarily water-bearing streams and individual swamp springs.
  • In the east, the use of grassland dominates, in the north and west the rich, rural cultural landscape . Grassland zones are rarely found.
  • The flat and poorly forested areas serve as settlement areas with high urban sprawl. There are many second homes in this area.
  • Day tourism is characteristic, there are some vantage points with panoramic and distant views.
