The Sparbach Nature Park was opened in 1962, making it the oldest nature park in all of Austria. It is located in the municipality of Hinterbrühl in Lower Austria and covers part of the southern Vienna Woods . The site is owned by the Prince Liechtenstein Foundation in Sparbach and is under protection. It is fenced in and only accessible during opening hours; an entrance fee is required.

Natural sights

The specialty of the nature park is its dense game population , mainly mouflon , fallow deer and wild boar . The Fürstenföhre, a pine several hundred years old, stands on the Dianawiese . There are more giant trees in the entire nature park, as the area was only used to a small extent for forestry purposes. Mandarin ducks made their home at the artificially created Lenauteich .

Built sights

The complex was originally built by Field Marshal Prince Johann I Josef von Liechtenstein as a zoo for hunting, with some art ruins and ornamental buildings typical of the Romantic era , such as the Köhlerhaus ruin (which serves as a lookout point), the Diana spring or the Diana temple. The only really historical building in the nature park is the medieval Johannstein ruin from the 12th century. In the course of the establishment of the nature park and the opening of the facility to the public, additional facilities were created: a visitor center at the only entrance in Sparbach, a petting zoo, a nature park house, a nature playground and a few stations with information boards and objects.
