St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz (also Sankt Marienkirchen an der Polsenz ) is a market town with 2314 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Hausruckviertel in the Eferding district in the state of Upper Austria in Austria . The community is located in the judicial district of Eferding .

geography

St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz is located at an altitude of 315 m in the Hausruckviertel. The extension is from north to south 7.0 km, from west to east 5.1 km. The total area is 23.82 km². 14.2% of the area is forested, 65.3% of the area is used for agriculture. The municipal area is traversed from west to east by the eponymous Polsenz .

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the so-called annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the "Gau Oberdonau". In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

St. Marienkirchen was part of the Waizenkirchen judicial district until 1923 and was added to the Eferding judicial district after its dissolution .

  • Parish church St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz : The parish church was first mentioned in 1151. With the exception of the tower (1721), today's church dates from the late Gothic period around 1500. The furnishings are uniformly neo-Gothic .
  • Cider Museum: In the municipality's coat of arms, the cider press refers to a traditional cider area that is favored by the climate. That is why there is a cider museum in the parish's renovated granary, which is around 350 years old. There you can see all kinds of presses, barrels and equipment for making must. Most of the exhibits date from the 18th century. There is also a binder workshop , a schnapps distillery , a beekeeping and a farmhouse parlor , also from the 18th century.

  • Obst-Hügel-Land Nature Park : The Obst-Hügel-Land is located between Wels and Eferding and spans the two communities of Scharten and St. Marienkirchen. It describes a gentle hilly landscape in the Upper Austrian Alpine foothills, whose appeal lies in the high density of the many fruit trees. Every year, when the fruit trees are in bloom, the fruit hill country with its cherry and apple trees in bloom is a popular destination. In addition to the production of must, the fruit trees in the Schlier area, which is very susceptible to landslides, are also of great importance due to their slope stabilizing effect.
