Ramsar Convention logo

Ramsar sites are closed after the 1971 Ramsar Convention protected areas for wetlands of international importance, according to the intention of the international international treaty in particular as a habitat for water and wading birds .

In Austria , 22 areas are designated according to the Ramsar Agreement, with around 1,200 km², that is 1.5% of the area of Austria .

The Ramsar Agreement in Austrian nature conservation law

The agreement, named after the place where the contract was concluded, the Iranian city of Ramsar , is one of the oldest international agreements on environmental protection . Austria has the Akzessionsurkunde backed by 16 December 1982, the Convention including amendments (additions) of (as the 32nd state) and Extraordinary Conference of the Contracting Parties in Regina, Canada, 1987 ( Regina amendments entered into force on May 1 1994), adopted.

A declaration as a Ramsar area is not a protection category in the actual sense, that is, it does not represent any concrete legal handling, but is a "predicate (seal of approval)", the protection itself is on a voluntary basis by the signatory states. Most of the Ramsar areas are therefore also secured by a state protection category , or at least put under protection in principle by environmental law ( ex-lege protection ), in particular moors and watercourses and their immediate edge zones.

The seat of the International Ramsar Secretariat for monitoring the implementation of the Convention and its further development is Gland VD on Lake Geneva. In Austria, where nature conservation at the state level is regulated, are for managing the natural, environmental and landscape protection offices and departments of the countries responsible for the national implementation of which is the Federal Environment Agency (BA) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in charge, and in particular the Joint state representative Austria for the Ramsar Agreement , currently (6/2010) DI  Wolfgang Pelikan at the Office of the Burgenland Provincial Government. Every three years, reports on the status of wetland protection are presented at conferences of the contracting states.
