List of Ramsar areas in Sweden
Ramsar sites are closed after the 1971 Ramsar Convention protected wetlands of international importance, according to the intention of the international international treaty in particular as a habitat for water and wading birds .
In Sweden there are 50 areas with Ramsar status.
Basics
The agreement, named after the place where the contract was concluded, the Iranian city of Ramsar , is one of the oldest international agreements on environmental protection . Sweden signed the agreement on December 5, 1974 without reservation (as the 4th state), and the convention including the amendments of the Extraordinary Conference of the Contracting Parties in Regina, Canada, of 1987 ( Regina Amendments , entered into force on 1 May 1994).
A declaration as a Ramsar area is not a protection category in the actual sense, that is, it does not represent any concrete legal handling, but is a "predicate (seal of approval)", the protection itself is on a voluntary basis by the signatory states.
The seat of the International Ramsar Secretariat for monitoring the implementation of the Convention and its further development is Gland VD on Lake Geneva. Every three years, reports on the status of wetland protection are presented at conferences of the contracting states.
