Basics

The agreement, named after the place where the contract was concluded, the Iranian city of Ramsar , is one of the oldest international agreements on environmental protection . Germany ratified the agreement on February 26, 1976 (as the 11th state), and the convention including the amendments of the Extraordinary Conference of the Contracting Parties in Regina, Canada, of 1987 ( Regina Amendments , came into force on 1 May 1994).

The headquarters of the International Ramsar Secretariat for monitoring the implementation of the Convention and its further development is in Gland on Lake Geneva.
