Spring flood in the "Aland-Elbe-Niederung" nature reserve

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0388 is around 6009  hectares in size. The previous nature reserves “Garbe-Alandniederung” and “Elbaue Beuster-Wahrenberg” have merged into it. The 2,919 hectare FFH area “Elbaue Beuster-Wahrenberg” and the 2,573 hectare FFH area “Aland-Elbe-Niederung north of Seehausen” as well as the 5,123 hectare EU bird sanctuary “Aland-Elbe-Niederung” are largely part of the nature reserve . The nature reserve is bordered mostly to the conservation area "Aland Elbe valley". On the Brandenburg side, the nature reserves "Elbdeichvorland" and "Wittenberge-Ruhstädter Elbniederung" follow. The area has been under protection since June 16, 2009. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Stendal.

The nature reserve is located in the valley of the Elbe and Aland in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . It extends along the Elbe, which runs in large loops, between the state border with Lower Saxony at Elbe kilometer 473 and the Elbe dike at Elbe kilometer 431 northwest of Werben (Elbe) or the Aland from the confluence with the Elbe to the northeast of Seehausen (Altmark) and puts the rivers of the Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt or the Aland with the adjacent lowland areas under protection. Large parts of the nature reserve are subject to the natural dynamics of the rivers and are flooded during floods.

The nature reserve is of vast grassland complex medium to wet locations as well as soft and Hartholzau dominated residues. It is criss-crossed by a multitude of oxbow lakes , flood channels and wet depressions . Inland dunes can be found here and there. Most of the grassland is used intensively.
