The common pond cress ( Rorippa palustris ) is a species of the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). It is most common in Central Europe.
description
Vegetative characteristics
The Rorippa palustris grows as a one-year , rarely, a few years perennial herbaceous plant and reaches stature heights of approximately 20 cm to 60th The upright, angular stem is often sparsely branched, at least in the upper part, and is bald or short-haired in the lower part.
All leaves are eyed at the bottom and mostly bare. The lower leaves are stalked, lyre-shaped, pinnate and have four to eight pairs of elongated, lobed toothed lateral sections with a large, egg-shaped end section. The upper leaves usually have two to six pairs of lateral sections, which are usually slightly narrower than those on the lower leaves. The stem leaves usually clearly surround the stem.
Generative characteristics
The common pond cress flowers mainly from June to September. The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers are fourfold. The four green sepals are about 2 mm long. The four petals are either the same length or a little shorter and colored pale yellow.
The pod, which sits on an approximately 4 to 8 mm long, almost horizontally protruding stalk, is elongated, often slightly curved, about 5 to 9 mm long and 2 to 2.5 mm thick. The seeds standing in two rows are brown to yellowish-brown, with a length of 0.5 to 0.9 mm and a diameter of 0.4 to 0.6 mm, egg-shaped or almost spherical.
The chromosome set is 2n = 32.
Occurrence
General distribution
Rorippa palustris is almost cosmopolitan these days . In Austria it occurs moderately often to absent-minded, while in Switzerland it is to be found widespread. In the Allgäu Alps in Vorarlberg near the mountain station of the Kanzelwandbahn , it rises to an altitude of 1920 meters.
Distribution in Germany
Common pond cress is widespread in Germany and is usually found frequently.
Location requirements
The common pond cress grows in two-tooth banks. It prefers moist, nutrient-rich, nitrogen-containing, humic muddy soils. It grows on the banks of waters, in ditches and in more humid ruderal areas. In Central Europe it is a character species of the order Bidentetalia.
