Christian August Friedrich Garcke (born October 25, 1819 in Bräunrode , † January 10, 1904 in Berlin ) was a Prussian , German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Garcke ".

Life

August Garcke was the son of a chief forester. He studied theology in Halle from 1840, but finally turned to botany after passing the state and doctoral exams (1844). He moved to Berlin in 1851 and was employed by the Royal Botanical Museum in Berlin from 1856. Garcke was appointed to the examination committee for pharmacists in 1867, completed his habilitation in 1869 and was appointed associate professor for medicinal plants in 1871 . He gained a reputation among colleagues as an important connoisseur of Germany's higher plants .

August Garcke died after a brief illness on January 10, 1904 at the age of 84 in Berlin. His grave is in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Churches in Berlin-Kreuzberg . A zippus on a pedestal made of red-brown granite serves as the gravestone. A portrait medallion created by Lilli Wislicenus-Finzelberg is embedded in the front .

Works

The first part of his Flora von Halle appeared in 1848 and the second in 1856 . As early as 1849 he published his main work, Flora von Nord und Mitteldeutschland , which was expanded to Flora von Deutschland with the 13th edition in 1878 and was illustrated from the 17th edition (1895) ( Illustrierte Flora von Deutschland ). The 23rd and final edition appeared in 1972 after a long break after the 22nd edition in 1922.

Garcke was also the co-editor of a large number of botanical treatises and improved reprints of earlier works. From 1867 to 1882 he was editor of the magazine Linnæa , which was then discontinued.

The house where he was born in Braunröde is known today as the “Garckestift”. It is inhabited and is a listed building.

Honors

In 1892 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

By resolution of the Berlin Senate , Garcke's final resting place in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Churches (grave location 311-4-10) in Berlin-Kreuzberg has been dedicated since 1973 as a grave of honor for the State of Berlin . The dedication was extended in 1999 by the now usual period of twenty years.

A moss genus Garckea Müll.Hal was named after Garcke . from the family of the Ditrichaceae .
