August Binz

August Binz (born December 8, 1870 in Basel , † March 7, 1963 there , reformed , resident in Basel) was a Swiss botanist . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Binz ".

Life

August Binz was born on December 8, 1870 in Basel as the son of the gardener Johann August Binz. After studying at the Universities of Basel and Zurich , August Binz received his doctorate in 1892 under Arnold Dodel (1843–1908). Subsequently he worked for a short time as a teacher in St. Gallen , then in Glarus , where he already turned to floristry . Subsequently, Binz taught between 1896 and 1931 at the upper secondary school in Basel. In addition, he worked from 1913 to 1957 as curator of the herbaria at the Botanical Institute of the University of Basel.

He was married to Sibylla nee Müller. August Binz died on March 7, 1963 at the age of 92 in Basel.

Act

As part of his dissertation on the morphology and history of the origin of starch grains , August Binz clearly localized the chlorophyll in the grana of the chloroplasts . His important work Flora von Basel und Umgebung , published in 1901, expanded Binz in 1920 to become a school and excursion flora in Switzerland . For many years, the book was the standard identification book at Swiss grammar schools. It was published in 1957, in the 8th – 17th Edition under the title School and excursion flora for Switzerland edited by Alfred Becherer (1897–1977). The 18th and 19th editions, published in 1986 and 1990, were redesigned by Christian Heitz (1942–2006).
