Old Elbe between Kannenberg and mountains

The Old Elbe between Kannenberg and Berge is a nature reserve in the town of Werben and the municipality of Iden in the Arneburg-Goldbeck association in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0045 is around 300 hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area “Elbaue Werben and Alte Elbe Kannenberg” and the EU bird sanctuary “Elbaue Jerichow” and borders almost entirely on the landscape protection areas “Aland-Elbe-Niederung” and “Altmärkische Wische”. The area has been under protection since 1978 (date of regulation: July 5, 1978). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Stendal.
The nature reserve is located southwest of Havelberg and west of Sandau (Elbe) on the edge of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve . It places a silting oxbow lake west of the Elbe under protection, which was created around 1700 when the Elbe was straightened. The oxbow lake is separated from the course of the Elbe, but connected to the Aland by the Great Waters, a ditch .
The nature reserve is characterized by extensive reed areas with reeds and narrow-leaved cattails . In addition, marsh cress, water horse sowing societies and water swaths can be found, and occasionally also marsh rush , fir-frond and small reed . In several places there are still open areas of water with duckweed and crab claws as well as small swamp forests .
The extensive reeds are habitat for marsh harrier , bittern , reed warbler , various reed warblers ( thrush warbler , reed warbler and pond warbler ) as well as greylag goose , all of which also breed here. In the landing areas of Elbealtarms breeding Little Grebe , Pochard , Water Rail , Spotted Crake and black tern . The kingfisher also finds a suitable habitat and breeds in caves on the former impact slope . The nature reserve is sought after by sea eagles , ospreys , shelduck and blue- tailed snipe .
The nature reserve is also a habitat for Elbe beavers and otters . Furthermore, the tree frog , green toad , natterjack toad and slow worm, as well as wedge-spot mermaid find suitable living conditions.
The nature reserve can be viewed from the path that runs along the former dike west of the nature reserve.
