history

Sandau (as the village of Sandowe ) is mentioned for the first time in a document issued no later than 1192 . In 1272 the place was given city rights.

The construction of the very well-fortified late Romanesque church of St. Laurentius and St. Nicholas as a three-aisled pillar basilica in brick construction began around 1200 . The broad tower had a hipped roof. The church was destroyed in a big fire in 1695 except for the surrounding walls. In 1858/59 the baroque interior alterations were removed during a restoration.

From 1680 Sandau was directly subordinate to the Brandenburg-Prussian Duchy of Magdeburg as an immediate city and was in the Jerichow district until 1807 . It was the northernmost city in the duchy.

In April 1945, the city was almost completely destroyed after a unit of the Waffen SS stationed nearby prevented the surrender and shot a US MP. After twelve days of artillery bombardment by US troops stationed on the left bank of the Elbe, they occupied the small town on the right bank of the Elbe on April 25, 1945.

The church of St. Laurentius and St. Nicholas was largely destroyed in the fighting. The nave was restored in the 1950s and 1970s, the massive tower remained in ruins. Reconstruction began in 2002: in 2008 it was restored to the third floor, above which it was still in ruins; In 2013 it was finally completed with a roof turret.

The Evangelical Church of St. Nicholas and St. Laurentius is located on the highest point of the city. Your parish belongs to the Stendal parish in the Stendal-Magdeburg provost of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . A regional church community has its seat on Triftstrasse.

In 1945, three nuns from the Rhineland were evacuated with orphans to the castle, which dates back to the 14th century and was once the summer residence of the bishops of Magdeburg . During a bombing raid, the owner promised to leave the castle to the Catholic Church if she survived it. In 1947 the castle was given to the Catholic Church as a children's home, in 1957 it had to be closed due to pressure from the GDR authorities. A nursing home for the elderly was then set up in the building, which still exists today as the Caritas nursing home for the elderly in St. Marien and which is run by a Caritas company and offers 58 places to live. In 1999 the foundation stone was laid for an extension, and in 2000 the building was occupied. In 2001 the old building was renovated. In the castle there is a Catholic chapel, in which the parish of St. Elisabeth ( Tangermünde ) holds services.
