The Mahlpfuhler Fenn is a nature reserve in the town of Tangerhütte in the Stendal district and the municipality of Burgstall in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG 0044 is around 1210  hectares in size. Most of it is part of the FFH area of the same name and an EU bird sanctuary . In the north and in parts in the south it borders on the protected landscape area "Uchte-Tangerquellen und forest areas". The area has been under protection since 2002 (date of regulation: March 20, 2002). The approximately 355 hectare nature reserve of the same name, which was designated on July 5, 1978, was incorporated into it. Around 74 hectares of the protected area are designated as a total reserve. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Stendal and Börde.

The nature reserve is located west of Tangerhütte in the east of the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide . It places various types of biotope in the transition from moraine and inland dune areas to the Elbe lowlands under protection. In the north, the nature reserve includes the headwaters and valleys of the Mühlenbach and Karrenbach, in the middle the Hüselberge and in the south the Mahlpfuhler Feen, a hill moor, which gives it its name . The area of ​​the forest house Schernebeck in the north is excluded from the scope of the nature conservation ordinance.

Flora and fauna

The nature reserve is partly occupied by forests , partly by grassland areas . In damp locations in the north of the nature reserve, oak forests primarily grow. The herb layer is dominated by pipe grasses . The drier areas are occupied by birch-oak forest . In the Mahlpfuhler Fenn area, mainly birch peat forests grow . Valuable pine-bog forest communities with downy birch and Scots pine can also be found here. In this area of ​​the nature reserve you can find swinging lawns , heather societies and Toormoos societies with common cranberry , bell heather and rosemary heather , round-leaved sundew as well as narrow-leaved and deciduous cotton grass . Also, Boston fern , marsh tea , marsh violets and Bogbean occur here. Various types of orchids can be found on the wet meadows , including z. B. the broad-leaved orchid . Parts of the bog are cared for by means of decussing and rewetting measures . On the extensively managed grassland areas, which are criss-crossed by numerous ditches , you can find large sedge reeds and grass clown meadows .

The most species-rich occurrence of rare dragonflies in Saxony-Anhalt can be found in the nature reserve . So here are u. a. Speer Azurjungfer , moon Azurjungfer , helmet Azurjungfer , Green Snaketail , Large and white-faced darter , Late Adonislibelle , Torfmosaikjungfer , Arctic and spotted somatochlora to find.

The forest areas of the nature reserve are u. a. Habitat for honey buzzard , woodcock and black , gray and medium woodpecker , bog and grassland offer u. a. Habitat for crane , common snipe , rock swirl and wood sandpiper . In addition, eagle , red kite , black stork , red-backed shrike , ortolan , wagtail and grebes to find.

The Karrenbach is the habitat of loach , brook loach and crested newt . It is characterized by water crowfoot societies. The fire salamander is also native here. There are also occurrences of smooth snakes as well as marsh snakes , large oak buck and stag beetles and numerous water beetles in the nature reserve . The beaver is also native.

Others

The area drains through various ditches to the Mühlengraben in the north, Karrenbach in the middle and Dollgraben in the south. All three watercourses flow in a north-easterly direction to Lüderitz Tangier or Tangier , a left tributary of the Elbe .

The nature reserve is administered and maintained by the Burgstall State Forestry Office .
