The Diepholzer Moorniederung has a total size of around 105,000 ha and includes a large number of smaller and larger nature and landscape protection areas . The area comprises 24,000 hectares of raised bogs (geological definition), distributed over 15 raised bogs, as well as the Dümmer and its lowland on the southwestern edge .
location
The Diepholzer Moorniederung is located in the city triangle Bremen - Osnabrück - Hanover, mainly in Lower Saxony and with a small part in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Minden-Lübbecke . It is a flat valley sand depression on the southern edge of the North German Plain with only a few, slightly rising, gees ridges .
meaning
The area represents a long-term focus of the Lower Saxony high moor protection. It also fulfills important networking functions with other European bird sanctuaries ( Dümmer , Steinhuder Meer ). The area is an important breeding ground for bird species in the open moor, heather and wet meadow landscape. In 1979 the Diepholzer Moorniederung was declared a wetland of international importance according to the Ramsar Convention, mainly because of the breeding occurrence of the golden plover . The area is also the most important breeding ground for the great gray shrike and the short-eared owl in the interior of Lower Saxony. The Diepholzer Moorniederung is home to three bird species that are threatened with extinction according to the Red List Germany (Witt et al. 1996). Furthermore, the following endangered or endangered bird species occur here: goat milker , hen harrier , teal , tree falcon , snipe , curlew , redshank and stonechat . Since 2000, the Diepholzer Moorniederung has developed into an internationally important resting place for cranes and Nordic geese (up to over 40,000 cranes in autumn).
This area is also home to the Moor Schnuck , which is one of the endangered domestic animal breeds.
Protection status

Extensive protective measures were carried out in the Diepholzer Moorniederung natural area:
- Over 15,000 hectares are designated as a nature reserve.
- There are two wetlands of international importance with around 19,000 hectares, of which almost 18,000 hectares are protected under the EU Birds Directive , see Oppenweher Moor (bird sanctuary)
- Around 6,700 ha are registered as fauna-flora-habitat areas in the EU.
- The Dümmer has received the European reserve rating for a total of 2,000 hectares .
- Parts of the natural area are protected as a nature park , but there is no higher-level protected area for the entire natural area.
The project “Sustainable Nature Conservation in the Diepholzer Moorniederung” is supported by the Institute for Landscape Management and Nature Conservation (ILN) at the University of Hanover .
tourism
Tourists have the opportunity at five different places in the Diepholzer Moorniederung to get to know the moor on a regular trip on a field train: from Essern , Ströhen , Freistatt , Barnstorf and Goldenstedt . On 12 and 13 September 2009, the first took place Feldbahn - rally held Moorniederung in Diepholzer. The event was jointly organized by the Nature Conservation and Information Center Goldenstedter Moor , the Barnstorfer Umwelt-Erlebnis-Zentrum (BUEZ), the Freistätter Feldbahn, the municipality of Wagenfeld (as the operator of the Ströher Moorbahn) and the Uchter Moor Moor Railway Association .
The Jan Spieker tourist train commutes between the house in the moor in Goldenstedt-Arkeburg and the BUEZ in the warm season .
In addition to the NIZ Goldenstedt, the European Expert Center Moor and Climate in Ströhen and the “Gateway to the Moor” in Essern act as “moor-specific information centers” (name of the “Tourist Information Dümmerland”) .
