European Expert Center Moor and Climate ( EFMK ) is the name of an association (the Förderverein Europäische Fachzentrum MOOR und KLIMA eV ), the operating company of all projects (the European Expert Center MOOR and KLIMA GmbH Wagenfeld ) and an exhibition and administration center in Ströhen in the Diepholzer Moorniederung in Lower Saxony . The latter is better known under the name Moorwelten . The district of Diepholz, as the initiator of the center, rates its work as an "excellent offer to actively inform and involve the population and guests of the region about moor and climate protection as well as to strengthen practical moor and climate protection in the Diepholzer moorland and beyond" .

The municipality of Wagenfeld is the owner of the exhibition and administration building .

history

The Förderverein Europäische Fachzentrum MOOR und KLIMA eV was founded in 2011 after the Diepholz district decided in 2006 to establish the center for the Diepholz region on the proposal of the regional development concept (REK) (the REK referred to the old district of Diepholz ). After the foundation of the development association, the associated operating company was founded in 2012. Its shareholders are the municipality of Wagenfeld, the Förderverein EFMK eV and the BUND Landesverband Niedersachsen eV

The EFMK project, which was tackled in the ERDF funding period 2007-2013 with the help of the European Union , is to be further developed in accordance with the 2014 development concept.

On November 1st, 2014 the exhibition and administration center EFMK, also called Moorwelten , was opened.

In January 2015, the Wagenfeld community was one of the winners of the “Climate communal 2014” competition. The community was awarded by the "Climate Protection and Energy Agency Lower Saxony (KEAN)" for acting as a co-sponsor of the " lighthouse project " EFMK.

Purpose of the EFMK

The EFMK sees itself as a “center in which people from science and practice work together in an interdisciplinary manner, from the tried and tested nature conservation work to the dialogue with peat and agriculture through to tourist use.” Through intensive cooperation with partners within the EU, the EFMK aims to Deepening the Europe-wide exchange between research and application to improve the renaturation and use of raised bog areas.

The ERDF -Fördermittel the EU should serve Niedersachsen the "Optimization of the water balance in bogs of Diepholzer Moorniederung", according to the country. From the REK's point of view, the EFMK is supposed to compensate for the weakness that there are “few permanent, year-round cultural offers in the Diepholzer Land”.

The main project of the EFMK is the “OptiMoor” project. In cooperation with the University of Rostock , the EFMK tests and develops measures to optimize raised bog remediation on previously used agricultural sites to increase biodiversity and carbon storage . For this purpose, seven variants of waterlogging and remediation measures under controlled water management are being tested in a field trial (1 ha). Rostock-based agricultural and environmental scientists Gerald Jurasinski and Vytas Huth lead and coordinate the scientific support that takes into account the development of vegetation and nutrients, changes in relief , hydrology and greenhouse gas emissions .

Premises and activities

The shape of the EFMK building is reminiscent of a crane . The reference to the work of the EFMK is primarily that it organizes crane observations in October and November every year. In addition to the exhibition, the building houses several laboratories and conference rooms for research purposes. There is a barefoot park outside the house .

The work of the EFMK is based on a three-pillar concept:

  1. Presentation of the regional moor protection activities that have been carried out by BUND Diepholzer Moorniederung and the Diepholz district for 30 years (practical moor protection).
  2. The area of science and research for peatland and climate protection combines existing knowledge with innovative research projects in a European network.
  3. Visitor information and education for sustainable development via a modern, target group-oriented exhibition and as an extracurricular learning location.

On April 25, 2017, the EFMK was able to organize a discussion event in which representatives of the BUND and the NLWKN Nature Conservation Station Dümmer as well as the peat processing industry, the rural people of the County of Diepholz and the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture took part.

Finances

The construction costs for the exhibition and administration building amounted to € 3.85 million. The municipality of Wagenfeld took over € 1.8 million of this. The European Union provided € 1.6 million with ERDF funds, the Diepholz district € 200,000 and the Lower Saxony Bingo Environmental Foundation € 150,000. Half of the remainder of € 100,000 is contributed by the EFMK and BUND.

The EU is funding the “Optimoor” project. The Northwest Metropolitan Region contributes to the personnel costs of the scientists working for the EFMK. The federal government also participates in the financing of the EFMK through funding measures within the framework of the project “Sustainable Land Management - Innovative System Solutions” of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the project “Advice and coaching on the subject of peatland protection” of the Federal Ministry for the Environment , Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).
