The Rehdener Geestmoor nature reserve is an extensive open high moor in the municipality of Rehden , district of Diepholz in Lower Saxony . It is a representative raised bog for the Diepholzer Moorniederung natural area . The area size is 1762 ha according to GIS and 1760 ha according to the ordinance. Since 2018 it has also included the former NSG Rehdener Geestmoor regeneration area .
nature
The industrial peeling has been completed and the areas have largely been repaired for rewetting and renaturation . Further repairs as part of the restoration requirements for peat extraction are to follow. The watering and expansion of the raised bog vegetation has started in the central area on about 600 ha; In a ring around these rewetting areas, near-natural open degeneration stages with cotton grass , peat moss , heather and pipe grass areas follow. The rewetted hand peat stitches show peat moss rocking lawns and dying birch bog forests. In the edge zones there are also birch and bog forests , which are occasionally interspersed with pines. Except through the side ditches of two developed paths, the Geestmoor is no longer drained, so that the water balance of the bog can be established. The edge area is formed by extensive grassland, while small areas of moor meadows are interspersed in the east of the moor. The grassland is used extensively for sheep grazing and for making hay. The manager is a nature conservation foundation that uses two flocks of sheep for the moorland and grassland.
Habitat types
Priority habitat types
- Bog forests: secondary birch bog forest stages on formerly drained raised bogs, especially in the peripheral areas (area approx. 250 ha.)
Other habitat types
- Degraded raised bogs that are still capable of being renatured: rewetted, regenerating raised bog areas, predominantly rewetted peat areas with initial stages of bog vegetation as well as bog heather and pipe grass stages of various forms, in regenerating peat cuttings peat moss swinging lawns and open water areas. (Area size approx. 670 ha.)
- Transitional and quaking Moore: In the northwest region of the flat fen, predominantly bins vineyard ( Flatter -, thread - and onion bulrush ), a small area on a wet peat moss reed reeds ha with an area size of approx. 4
- Peat bog ditches: Occurrence of Schnabelried communities with white Schnabelried (Rhynchospora alba) and round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) on some areas.
- Moist heaths
- Dry European heaths: Calluna heaths on sandy elevations, partly island-like within the moor, partly in the moor edge areas. The area is approx. 11 ha.
Other habitat types of national importance
- Wet grassland: especially in the western edge of the moor. Moist, extensively grazed grassland, including the dominance of meadow sedge (area approx. 1 ha.).
- Mesophilic grassland: moderately moist to dry, extensively grazed, species-rich grassland, including a lot of common stony grass , red ostrich grass and red fescue or white clover , foxtail and meadow sedge with an area of approx. 10 ha.
- Other grassland of importance as a habitat for endangered species: Less species, more intensively used grassland areas, especially in the bog edge areas with predominantly avifaunistic importance. The area size is approx. 13 ha.
Other outstanding target species of nature conservation
- Dragonflies : high moor damsel (Aeshna subarctica) (last 1988)
- Butterflies : heather brush spinner (Orgyia ericae) (last 1981)
- Vascular plants (data from 1993): rosemary heather (Andromeda polifolia), arnica (Arnica montana), white beaked reed (Rhynchospora alba), round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos)
Current protection status
- NSG Rehdener Geestmoor (HA 247)
- BSG according to the EU bird protection directive
- Partial areas are specially protected biotopes according to § 28a NNatG
Observation tower
On the southern edge of the Rehden Geestmoors there is a 15 m high roofed observation tower , which is mainly used for bird watching. Access to the parking lot at the tower via the moor embankment is possible from both the B 239 north of the moor and the L 345 state road to the south .
