The Neustädter Moor is a nature reserve and is located northeast of Wagenfeld and south of Freistatt in the Diepholzer Moorniederung . In 2018, the former NSG Neustädter Moor II , Neustädter Moor regeneration area and meadow area Neustädter Moor were merged into it.

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 250 is 1479  hectares in size. Most of it is part of the FFH area of the same name and the EU bird sanctuary "Diepholzer Moorniederung".

history

The "Neustädter Moor" nature reserve is the oldest of the four former nature reserves mentioned above. The area has been under nature protection since February 20, 1969 and in the new layout since December 21, 2018. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Diepholz. It places part of a raised bog area under protection that has been changed by manual peat digging , but also by industrial peat extraction. The affected areas have now been renatured. The area has been expanded several times. It was initially around 150 hectares in size, but was expanded by around 50 hectares in 1972, by around 16 hectares in 1981 and finally by around 22 hectares in 1983 to its present size.

Geography and importance

The Neustädter Moor is primarily drained via the moor canal to the Flöthe and Wagenfelder Aue , which flows into the Hunte just above Barnstorf .

On the southern edge of the nature reserve there are two publicly accessible observation towers, which offer an overview of the moor landscape and can be used to observe birds in particular. The smaller tower is a station on the Ströher Moorbahn and the almost two-kilometer-long nature trail that leads to the edge of the nature reserve. The path is designed as a teaching and adventure trail. Information on the moor habitat is available at several stations. In addition to the nature trail, there are other hiking trails on the eastern edge of the nature reserve. In autumn, the Neustädter Moor is a crane resting place of European importance.
