The Große Renzeler Moor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon communities of Varrel and Kirchdorf and the area of Barenburg in the municipality of Kirchdorf in the district of Diepholz .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 252 is about 472  hectares . It is almost congruent with the FFH area "Renzeler Moor" and part of the 12,648 hectare EU bird sanctuary "Diepholzer Moorniederung", which consists of four sub-areas, and is largely surrounded by the landscape conservation area "Großes Renzeler Moor and Schwarzes Moor". A 231.6 hectare part of the nature reserve was designated on June 11, 1970 as a nature reserve "Großes Renzeler Moor" with the registration number NSG HA 033. On December 21, 2018, the nature reserves bordering the area " Wiesengebiet am Großer Renzeler Moor " and " Am Großer Renzeler Moor " as well as small parts of the landscape conservation area "Großes Renzeler Moor and Schwarzes Moor" became part of the "Großes Renzeler Moor" nature reserve. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Diepholz.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Sulingen in the Diepholzer Moorniederung . It provides a high moor area under protection, not industrially due to the relatively low power of the bog body abgetorft was. There are only hand peat cuttings in the nature reserve. The removal of peat using the manual peat cutting process remained permissible after it was placed under protection until the new version of the Nature Conservation Ordinance in 2018. Hand peat tricks are often full of water and slowly silt up. The area is characterized by an alternation of raised bog remains and areas overgrown with bog forests . The edge areas of the nature reserve are predominantly characterized by extensively used grassland . In some places arable land can be found. The grasslands also serve as a buffer zone to the intensively used agricultural areas outside the nature reserve .

In damp and wet areas, cotton grass , bell heather and crowberry as well as round-leaved sundew , common cranberry , brown sedge and beak sedge settle . Cotton grass, peat moss and swinging lawns can be found in the hand peat cuttings . The bog forests are dominated by the downy birch . The Scots pine joins them . In the undergrowth with a layer of moss rich in peat moss, u. a. with deceptive peat moss and fringed peat moss , sheath cottongrass, narrow-leaved cottongrass and bell heather settle . The peat forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood . Drier areas are occupied by grasses such as pipe grass , wiryweed and fescue, as well as heather and crowberry. On the sand ridges that penetrate the bog in places and go back to inland dunes , dry sand grass and sand heather with broom heather and bell heather, crowberry, Harz lab herb , silver grass , farm mustard and small sorrel settle .

The area is habitat for various species of birds including red kites , Eurasian Hobby , curlew , redshank , snipe , lapwing , teal , quail , nightjar , red-backed shrike , wood lark , redstart , brown and Stonechat . The nature reserve is important as a place to sleep for cranes resting in the Diepholz moorland . During the bird migration it is also a resting area for various other bird species.

The nature reserve is also the habitat of various dragonflies , including the northern moss damsel . Amphibians and reptiles are u. a. represented by the moor frog , natterjack toad and smooth snake . The sandy areas are home to field crickets and various butterflies and wild bees .

The area is drained via ditches leading to the Great Aue .
