Churches

Holy Cross Church in Barenburg

The small village church dates from the middle of the 15th century. It was built on the walls of a chapel that the Count of Hoya had built over a healing spring around 1200 . The medieval ceiling paintings in their figurative diversity and rich ornamentation create their own atmosphere. Together with the baroque altarpiece, the richly decorated Renaissance pulpit and the old Gothic font, they create a lively and very harmonious interior design.

Moor church in Freistatt

Today's moor church, which is located between the cemetery and the rectory, differs significantly from the old church. This church was planned as a "tent of encounter" and was understood as such from the start. In the old church, parallel rows of benches were aligned along the entire length of the nave towards the front wall. Now, the indicated concentric structure gives a stronger communicative trait, which in turn is in tension with the possible widening of the space.

St. Nikolai Church in Kirchdorf

The St. Nikolai Church in Kirchdorf is the center of a parish with six villages: Bahrenborstel , Holzhausen , Kirchdorf, Kuppendorf , Scharringhausen and Woltringhausen (with Buchholz and Ohlensehlen ). It was built between 1831 and 1833 by consistorial builder Hellner. On the ground plan of a cross, he built a classical church whose sobriety and simplicity point to the center of the evangelical faith: the word of God. The pulpit is the only piece of furniture that has decorations.

St. Mary's Church in Varrel

It is the third church in Varrel , which was designed and built in the neo-Gothic style in 1870/71 by the then master builder Hase. After the second church burned down in 1869, almost all of the furnishings from the time the church was built and the art perception of that time are designed accordingly. The baptismal font in the church is old, presumably donated by the Counts of Hoya , whose line died out in 1582. Your coat of arms is still faintly visible at the top. The base was re-made when the baptismal font, which in the meantime stood in a neighboring courtyard, was returned to the church in 1959.
