Geographical location
Hemsloh is located between the Dümmer Nature Park and the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park, roughly halfway between Bremen and Osnabrück . The municipality belongs to the integrated municipality Rehden , which has its administrative seat in the municipality Rehden . The community includes the Kellenberg with its extensive forest areas and the districts of Mackenstedt and Rodemühlen.

The community was first mentioned in a document in 1238.
Place name
The interpretation is doubtful, because the old evidence shows not -loh, but -le.
The word -loh - "forest" could only be interpreted later. The place name can be interpreted as a "curved, curvy hill".
