geography

Geographical location

Wetschen is located between the Dümmer Nature Park and the Rehdener Geestmoor , roughly in the middle between Bremen and Osnabrück . The municipality belongs to the integrated municipality Rehden , which has its administrative seat in the municipality Rehden . The community Wetschen consists of the localities Wetschen, Wetscherhardt and Spreckel.

climate

Temperate maritime climate, influenced by humid north-westerly winds from the North Sea, is predominant. On a long-term average, the air temperature in Wetschen reaches 8.5–9.0 ° C and around 700 mm of precipitation falls. Between May and August, an average of 20-25 summer days (climatological term for days on which the maximum temperature exceeds 25 ° C) can be expected.

history

The community was first mentioned in a document in 1238 as "Wetdecun". Between 1238 and 1250 it appeared as "Weddeschen" in a list of the income of the Osnabrück bishop from the main Drebber court. In 1406 it appeared in the spelling "Weddes -schen". An attempt at interpretation is difficult.

There was also a noble family (v. Weddesche) who got their name from the village. Their origin is not known. It suddenly appeared around 1300 and disappeared from the records from 1517.

The village was not spared from disease, fires and the effects of war. It is said that in an epidemic (probably typhus or dysentery ) in 1735 37 people were killed. In 1792 28 children died of the leaves . In 1781 there was a major fire in Wetschen. At that time, 13 houses and 40 other buildings burned down. In 1921 there was no house in Wetschen that had inscriptions from before 1700. In 1864 there was a census. It resulted in 456 for Wetschen, 72 for Spreckel, 152 for Wetscherhardt and five residents for Wetscher Wiesenhütte.
