Location of the Okres Liberec

The Okres Liberec (German: District Reichenberg ) is a district in Liberecký kraj (Reichenberg region) in the Czech Republic . The okresy were up to the dissolution of district administrations on 31 December 2002, roughly equivalent to the counties in Germany, but today make no independent administrative units longer represent.

The district is located in Northern Bohemia and extended from the Jeschken Mountains to the Jizera Mountains .

174,811 residents (as of January 1, 2019) live on an area of 989 km² in 59 municipalities with 247 districts. 85% of the population live in the nine cities. The district is one of the most densely populated districts in the Czech Republic. 42% of the area is forested, 48% can be used for agriculture.

The Liberec region is heavily industrialized. The most important sectors are metal processing, mechanical engineering, the textile and plastics processing industry and an increasing number of automotive suppliers. Many jobs and export markets were lost due to the severe slump in the textile industry. The unemployment rate is 9.2% and is still below the national average, but it is the highest in Liberecký kraj. The gross wage is below the national average.

Due to its location, the district offers a year-round program for tourists. In addition to winter sports, hiking tourism is becoming more and more established, as are some cultural and historical sights. At the foot of the Jizera Mountains there are numerous swamps, in Český Dub there are objects of folk architecture , at Frýdlant there are castles.

On January 1, 2007, the district expanded to include the town of Jablonné v Podještědí and the municipality of Janovice v Podještědí from the Okres Česká Lípa .
