Světlá pod Ještědem (German: Swetla ) is a municipality in okres Liberec in northern Czech Republic . After the village Světlá on the southern slope of the Jeschken Mountain in the Jeschken Mountains , the writer Karolína Světlá chose her pseudonym in the 19th century . It is the setting for some of her novels and stories. Today eight surrounding villages are attached to the municipality.

history

The farm "Antošův statek", the setting of the "Vesnický román" (village novel) from 1867, now houses an inn.

The village of Světlá arose from the interpretation of the place name Swetlai in the middle of the 12th century. Originally it was a hunting seat and, on a road to the Sorbian territory , became a market town; the market rights were transferred to the neighboring Český Dub in the middle of the 13th century , which subsequently took over the name Swetlai for around 100 years. The first written mention of today's village and its parish church comes from the year 1359. Until the fall of the Johanniter - Kommende in Český Dub during the Hussite Wars in 1429, Světlá belonged to the local manor and then until 1848 to the subsequent owners of the extensive manor of Bohemian Aicha . Although the place was mostly inhabited by Czechs (population for Svetla with the districts Hodky, Jiříčkov, Hoření Paseky and Vesec: 1091 Czechs, 91 Germans), it came from 1938 to 1945 to the Reichsgau Sudetenland . In 1945 the German-speaking residents of the place were expelled in the direction of Zittau . The village had medium-sized farms and smallholders. The main line of business was the trade in milk, butter, eggs, honey, poultry and bed feathers to the nearby Reichenberg and was popular as a summer resort and starting point for hikes. Resident wholesalers brought the geese fattened for Christmas from goose farms to Dresden and Prague .

Attractions

  • Only the west tower of the medieval St. Nicholas Church has been preserved. Its current baroque form dates from the years 1725–30. The interior was destroyed in a fire in 1899. In front of the church there is a statue of the writer Karolína Světlá from 1930, made by the sculptor Josef Bílek.
  • During the summer months from 1853 to 1865, the writer often stayed in Světlá - the birthplace of her husband Petr Muschak - and incorporated rural life into her work. Many of the settings of her prose, the village houses, farms and the rural surroundings of the place, have been preserved in their original form.
