Pichilemu is a city in Chile . It has 13,916 inhabitants (as of 2012) and is the capital of the province of Cardenal Caro . It is located in the Región del Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins , on the Pacific Ocean . The city is considered a surfing paradise . The name of the city comes from the Mapuche language , the Mapudungun , and means something like small forest .

history
In 1544 Juan Gómez de Almagro received the land from Pedro de Valdivia . Over the years, smaller land units were distributed in the area. In the 19th century a village with streets slowly formed under the landowning family Ortúzar Cuevas.
By decree of President Jorge Montt Álvarez , the municipality of Pichilemu was created on December 22nd, 1891. José Maria Caro became the first mayor in 1894. The entrepreneur and politician Agustín Ross Edwards (1852-1897) recognized the tourist qualities of Pichilemu and greatly expanded the infrastructure.

Pichilemu describes itself as the most important surfing area in the Pacific area of South America . Many European and American surfers visit the city's beaches. The beach sections Infiernillo Beach , La Puntillia and Punta de Lobos are the main destinations for surfers. International and national surfing competitions take place every year. On average, the waves are between 2 and 2.5 m high.
The Ruta de la Sal leads through the salt production facilities on the coast at Cáhuil , Barrancas , La Villa , El Bronce , La Palmilla and La Plaza .
The Ruta de San Andrés is a processional path that has been dedicated to Saint Andrew since 1866 and is walked annually on November 30th ( St. Andrea's Day).
In the city and the surrounding area there are small forests and parks, such as the Municipal Park Agustín Ross Edwards , which has been a national monument since 1988. Lagoons and the river Est. Nilahue 10 km south of the city is ideal for hiking and picnicking.
At Punta de Lobos a large number of maned seals live on the rocks on the Pacific.
economy
Pichilemu lives almost exclusively from tourism. Agriculture and fishing do not play a major role.
A reforestation program by the FAO and CONAF is currently running in the Pichilemu area.
