Prefectures of Togo
The prefectures of Togo form the administrative level below the five regions of the West African state of Togo . In 2020 there were 39 prefectures and the capital Lomé.
history
At the time of Togo's independence from France there were 4 regions, which were further subdivided into 17 "circles" ( circonscriptions ). In 1981 a fundamental administrative reform took place. The now 21 circles were now called "prefectures" ( prefectures ) and an additional nine "sub-prefectures" ( sous-prefectures ) established (Kpendjal, Tandjouare, Dankpen, Blitta, Est-Mono, Moyen-Mono, Danyi, Agou, Avé). In 1992 the nine sub-prefectures were given prefectural status, bringing the total number of prefectures to 30. In the following years another four sub-prefectures were created (Akébou, Bas-Mono, Kpélé-Akata and Cinkassé). With Law No. 2009-027 of December 3, 2009, these four sub-prefectures received the status of prefectures. In addition, the new Anié prefecture was created by separating it from the Ogou prefecture and the new sub-prefecture Plaine du Mô. Togo was thus divided into 35 prefectures and one sub-prefecture. On May 27, 2016, the Togolese parliament approved the establishment of four new prefectures: Mô (administrative center Djarkpanga), Agoè-Nyivé (administrative center of the place of the same name), Oti-Sud (administrative center Gando) and Kpendjal-Ouest (administrative center Naki-Est).
