Bafilo is a small town in Togo . It is located in the north of the country in the Kara region and is the capital of the Asoli prefecture. The capital Lomé is about 400 kilometers away in the south, the capital of the Kara region is about 25 kilometers in the north. About 15 km to the east is the border with the neighboring state of Benin .

history

In pre-colonial times, the area around Bafoli was part of the Kingdom of Kotokoli and was inhabited by the Mola, a clan of the Gurma belonging to the Temba . During the German colonial era , Bafilo was the name of several settlements in the Sokode administrative district, which at the time was based in the city of the same name, Sokodé .

During the First World War , a skirmish between French and German troops broke out in Bafilo on August 13, 1914 . The French armed forces had crossed the border between the French Dahomey and the German colony for the first time on August 8 or 9, 1914 . On August 13th, the French unit came into contact with German security forces. After some light fighting, the French company withdrew as they faced more resistance than expected.

Today the place is known for its large mosque , Wagassi cheese , a local specialty, and the nearby Bafilo waterfalls .

The national road N1 crosses the town in a north-south direction , at the same time it is the eastern starting point of the national road N38, which runs in an east-west direction .

There is also a small textile industry in the village.
