The Riedel mine is a former potash mine near Hänigsen , Uetze . It is the world's deepest mine for potash salt .

The shaft Riedel was in the years 1905 to 1908 drilled (770 m). In 1909 with the promotion started. In 1907/08 a mine connection railway was built from Burgdorf via Sorgensen and Weferlingsen to Hänigsen. In 1928 there was a temporary closure. From 1937 to 1945 the mine was part of the Army ammunition production facility and underground storage facility for the Heeresmunitionsanstalt Hänigsen .

On June 18, 1946, there was an explosion here in Hänigsen . In 1949 new fittings were added to the shaft and potash extraction was resumed. The mine remained in operation until 1997. The production of potash was stopped in 1996, that of rock salt in 1997. The bottom is at a depth of 1525 meters . The plans for an underground toxic waste dump were rejected.

Old armaments (fuses, grenades, excelsior warfare agent (10-chloro-9,10-dihydroacridarsine, blue cross) and its precursor merodanic acid are probably still stored on the 650 m and 750 m levels . The rainwater on the site and the dump seepage water (around 10,000 m³ / year) is channeled into the Thöse stream . The mine is expected to be flooded by 2050. The BUND criticizes this measure.

The miners' association founded in 1908 still exists today.
