Kara , also Lama-Kara , is the third largest city in Togo and the capital of the Kara region of the same name . About 104,207 people live in Kara.

Kara is the economic center of the Kara region, especially under the reign of the long-time Togolese dictator Gnassingbé Eyadéma , the Kabiyé living here and the region were given special support. Kara became an important administrative and economic center of northern Togo.

Since 2004, Kara has been the location of the Université de Kara , Togo's second university, which currently has around 1,500 students.

The city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Kara since 1994 .

The most important football club in Karas is ASKO Kara , which won the Togolese championship in 1988 and 1989, 1996 and most recently in 2007.
