history

The division into the regions has existed since 1970. At the beginning of the 1950s, Togo, which was still French, was divided into 6 "circumscriptions". In 1955 these were dissolved into the four regions Center, Maritime, Plateaux and Savanes, and in 1966 they were abolished as administrative units and reintroduced in 1970 . As the last change to this division, the Kara region was formed in 1981 from parts of the Center and Savanes regions.
