history

Chief's house in Anecho, ca.1910

Originally the place where there was a Portuguese slave market was known as Popovi. At the beginning of German colonial rule in 1884, Anecho was briefly occupied by the French. In exchange for Kapitaï and Koba , the later Conakry in Guinea, the city was added to Germany in the border treaty of December 24, 1885. From 1885 to 1897, Sebe, a small town on the north side of the lagoon near Anecho, was the seat of the central administration of the German colony Togo , from the larger, eastern half of which later became the state of Togo. After Sebe had to give up the capital status to Lomé in 1897, Aného experienced a gradual decline, which was exacerbated by erosion phenomena on the coasts.

In 1905 it was renamed to today's place name . In the same year, the place received a railway connection through the Lomé – Aného railway.
