Overview of the systems at the Ismaninger reservoir

The Ismaninger reservoir is a reservoir in Bavaria . It is located northeast of Munich between Ismaning and Neufinsing . Even if it is named after the town of Ismaning at the beginning of the lake, it only touches the municipality and is located in the municipality of Aschheim , Kirchheim bei München , Pliening and Finsing .

The lake, which was created in 1929, is located directly on the north bank of the Mittlere-Isar Canal . In addition to regulating the water in the power plants on the Isar Canal and providing protection against flooding, the lake also serves as a natural secondary treatment for Munich's sewage . Bathing is forbidden in the lake, but wild birds can be observed there and it is possible to fish.

Overview of the plant

The Isar Canal coming from the Isar branches for the first time immediately after crossing under the A99 . A side canal is used to supply water to the ponds of the former Birkenhof pond , which accompany the canal for several kilometers in the south. At roughly the same point, part of Munich's wastewater is pumped from the Gut Großlappen sewage treatment plant through the main E.ON Wasserkraft pumping station between Unterföhring and Ismaning over the pressure pipe bridge into the fish ponds. Between the ponds and the canal, there is a drainage canal that takes the water from the ponds again. After a further three kilometers, a canal supplies the 7 km long and about 1 km wide reservoir in the north of the canal. The Ismaning reservoir power plant is located at the discharge point . At this point, another part of the waste water is pumped into the fish ponds via the branch pipe bridge. The observation tower that can be seen there is actually a standpipe tower for pressure equalization in the sewer pipes. The reservoir is divided into a west and an east basin by a central dam. Its depth is a maximum of 3 m, on average 1.9 m. With an area of 5.8 km², it has a storage capacity of 11.1 million m³.

The BMW exhibition center in Aschheim is located on the north shore of the lake . At the Neufinsing power plant , the main channel and the two discharge channels of the lake and the fish ponds meet again and the water continues to flow in the channel towards Landshut .

To the south of the reservoir lies the Birkenhof estate with 90 fish ponds between the A99 in the west and the interception ditch in the east. The carp farming was stopped in 2000 due to a lack of profitability.

fishes

The Ismaninger reservoir is an excellent fishing water and is known for its very large carp (20 to 25 kg) and big bream (up to 8 kg), which are regularly caught there in record weights. In the fast-flowing water of the inlet, fish woad for trout, huchen (isolated), chub , barbel and nasal is possible, and in quieter places for pike and tench .

The Fischereiverein Fischwaid Munich has leased the lake and manages the water.

Bird sanctuary

In 1962, the reservoir area and the 80 fish ponds of the Birkenhof pond were declared a European reserve. The area is very important as a breeding, feeding, moulting, wintering and migration area and was certified as a wetland of international importance in 1976 by the Ramsar Agreement . As far as the moulting area for water birds is concerned, the reservoir is one of the three most important areas in Europe. Within the Natura 2000 network of protected areas , the purpose of which is the transnational protection of endangered wild native plant and animal species and their natural habitats, the reservoir and the pond material received a place on the list of SPA ( Special Protection Area ) and IBA ( Important Bird Area ) Protected areas. In order to secure the area permanently, the Bavarian Nature Conservation Fund finances the maintenance and care management. The south bank of the west basin is a nature reserve, so entry is prohibited all year round. In 2007, the influenza A virus H5N1, which is also dangerous for humans, was found in three dead ducks in the western basin .

In 2013, a pair of the holy ibis brooded on the reservoir for the first time in Germany .
