The BMW exhibition center is an area of 67 hectares in the municipality of Aschheim near Munich . The fenced-in area with a test track from the car manufacturer BMW stretches around four kilometers along the northern bank of the Ismaninger reservoir . The width is only between 100 and 600 meters. It opened on October 20, 1971.

Regardless of the actual location of the main building and most of the areas in the Aschheim district, the area is often referred to as the Ismaning test site because Ismaning is the closest location. The eastern part of the site lies in the area of the municipality of Finsing in the district of Erding , a small segment belongs to the municipality of Pliening in the district of Ebersberg . The basis for the location decision at the time was the proximity to the BMW main plant in Munich- Milbertshofen , the evenness of the area in the Erdinger Moos and the largely settlement-free area.

The terrain is characterized by a four-kilometer, completely straight test route, which is designed in the form of a federal motorway with two lanes in each direction. Other systems include a circular plate, a curve course, crosswind fans, a steep hill and a crash system as well as a free-field high-frequency measuring system with a vehicle turntable and measuring bunker. Up until 2005, the company's most modern vehicle measuring rooms were also housed in the premises, after which they were no longer renewed and replaced by the “Energy and Environmental Test Center” in the Munich Research and Innovation Center (FIZ).

Due to the spatial restrictions in the Aschheimer Messgelände, which is not considered expandable due to the nature reserve around the neighboring reservoir, rumors arose in 2008 about new plans in the Hessenreuther Wald in the Tirschenreuth district . The company denied such plans.
