The Buchberg is 801  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the area of ​​the municipality Mattsee in the district Salzburg-Umgebung in the state of Salzburg . It is made of flysch rocks and represents the highest elevation in the Wallersee and Mattsee basin. From the small viewing plateau at the summit, you can see the Salzburg lake area , the Alpine foothills in Upper Austria and the rugged Northern Limestone Alps .

The environment is an exclusively natural cultural landscape, which is composed primarily of extensive agricultural, sometimes intensively used meadow areas and rural hamlets, which are connected by a rural network of paths. The forest areas in between show a natural composition of beech, fir, maple and spruce and can be assigned to the beech-fir forest in terms of vegetation , but spruce monocultures occur more frequently.

The Buchberg summit itself and the immediate and indirect surroundings are accessed by a dense network of paths.

Around 34 hectares south-east and south-west of the summit have been designated as a protected part of the landscape since 2007 and, congruently, as the Buchberg Nature Park since 2009 .

In 1970, the Austrian Nature Conservation Union bought the Buchberg summit with 2.5 hectares as a panoramic mountain and thus dedicated building land back to grassland . In 1972 the Buchberg was inaugurated as a nature park for the first time. He lost this title in 1977 due to a change in the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act . In 2007, 7 property owners brought 34.7 hectares as a protected part of the landscape and founded the Buchberg Nature Park Association with the Naturschutzbund . The ordinance on the Buchberg Nature Park was only possible on the basis of the ordinance on the protected part of the landscape. It came into force on May 30, 2009.
