The Albisrieden cemetery is a cemetery in the Albisrieden district in the west of Zurich . It is located near the Altstetten and Eichbühl cemeteries .

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, Albisrieden had to find a replacement for the previous Triemlistrasse cemetery due to the population development . The Albisrieden cemetery was opened in 1902 and expanded in 1939. In 1948, the mayor of Zurich rejected the application by the community hall and district association that an abdication hall should be built in the cemetery. Instead, the project for the later Eichbühl cemetery was tackled in the 1950s because of the building boom in Albisrieden and Altstetten. As the predicted population development failed to materialize, the city council decided in 1981 to only occupy the Albisrieden cemetery until 2005 and to permanently close it in 2027 in order to convert it into a green area. There was resistance from the population of Albisried, so that this city council resolution was repealed in 2004. In 2009 the city added the Albisrieden cemetery to its garden monuments inventory. In 2010 the new communal grave was created by the landscape architects Ernst and Hausherr as well as the artist Jürg Altherr.

Area and buildings

The Albisrieden cemetery was built in 1902 on the border with Altstetten . In the course of its existence, the cemetery was surrounded by residential houses due to the building boom. To the northeast of the cemetery is the Untermoos school building , and to the southwest is the Buchlern sports facility . Due to the topography and the nearby foothills of the Albis chain , the orientation of the cemetery runs from southeast to northwest, as is the case with the neighboring Altstetten and Eichbühl cemeteries. Three entrances lead to the Albisrieden cemetery, with Untermoosstrasse leading in a straight line from the southeast to the main portal of the cemetery. The planting of Untermoosstrasse has been adapted to the design of the cemetery, so that the visitor is already in the mood for it before entering the cemetery. The continuation of Untermoosstrasse forms an avenue leading to Thujabäumen and red Japanese Maple is busy. These trees shield the visitor from view, as the avenue leads to the former funeral hall. This neo-Gothic brick building forms the end point of the visual axis. Today the building is no longer used as a funeral hall, but is used as an office building. The converted building is flanked by cypress trees . The large central field of the cemetery is bordered by the avenue and the path that leads from Algiersstrasse through the cemetery. The north-eastern area of the cemetery is determined by the community grave built in 2010. Two artistic elements by Jürg Altherr are intended to help the bereaved when they say goodbye: the mourning can be symbolically placed on the Elisabeth mourning table , the wind rake should direct the visitor's gaze to the sky.
