Yiddish Theater Dora Wasserman

The Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theater in Montreal is the only Yiddish theater in Canada . It is located in the Center Segal des arts de la scène ( Center Segal for Performing Arts ), a cultural center for the performing arts .

history

The theater was founded in 1958 by the Jewish actress Dora Wasserman of Ukrainian descent. Initially, entertainment shows with a professional comedian and amateur actors achieved great success. In addition, classical and contemporary plays were performed, e. B. by Sholem Alejchem and Shalom Asch.

Since 1968 the theater has been producing musical comedies with the composer Eli Rubinstein, which are very popular with audiences. In 1996 Bryna Wasserman, a daughter of Dora Wasserman, became the new director of the ensemble. By 2003 a total of about 70 productions were performed.
