Aharon Megged

Aharon Megged (born November 2, 1920 in Włocławek , Poland , † March 23, 2016 in Tel Aviv-Jaffa ) was an Israeli writer , playwright and publicist .

Life

In 1926 he came to Palestine with his parents , where he grew up in Ra'anana and later was a member of Kibbutz Sdot Jam for twelve years . He was the co-founder and editor of the weekly literary magazine Masa for fifteen years and worked as an editor for various other newspapers and magazines, including Davar . From 1968 to 1971 he was cultural attaché at the Israeli embassy in London .

He has published 35 books that have been translated into different languages. His plays have been and are performed in Israeli theaters, including the Israeli National Theater Habima . His play about the Hungarian-Jewish poet Hannah Szenes is particularly well known , who took part in the fight against Nazi Germany as a parachutist during the Second World War and was murdered by the Nazis in Budapest in 1944. This play premiered on May 31, 1958 in the Habima Theater. Aharon Megged was married to the writer Ida Tsurit . The couple had two sons: Eyal Megged (writer) and Amos Megged (historian at Haifa University ).

Awards

Among other things, he has received the Brenner Prize , the SY Agnon Prize and the Prime Minister's Prize .
