The Bialik Prize for Beautiful Literature and Science of Judaism is an important literary prize that has been awarded since 1933 to authors in the field of fiction and the science of Judaism by the City of Tel Aviv-Jaffa in a joint decision with the Tel Aviv City Council . This year the poet Chaim Nachman Bialik , for whom the award was created as a gift and honor, celebrated his 60th birthday. Since his immigration to Israel, Bialik had chosen Tel Aviv as the place of his work and had a major influence on its cultural life.

Statutes of the award

The aim of the award is to promote the work of Hebrew-speaking writers and researchers who live in the State of Israel.

The awards are given to the authors of the most outstanding works published in the Hebrew language in the past two years according to the Jewish calendar . Three prizes are awarded in the field of fiction, one of them for children's literature. In the field of the science of Judaism, two prizes are awarded. If possible, the announcement of the winners should take place in a ceremony near Chaim Nachman Bialik's birthday.

The jury, which is responsible for deliberating on each award, is authorized to award the award not only for an individual book, but also for the life's work of a writer or researcher. The award cannot be awarded to an author twice in a ten-year period. The prize is not awarded to anyone who has won the Israel Prize . If, in the opinion of the jury, there is no literary work that deserves the Bialik Prize, it is entitled to ask the city council to postpone the award ceremony that year. If there are no books worthy of a prize in the following year either, the city council receives the power to dedicate the prize money to another literary foundation that supports Hebrew literature and its authors.

The prize money is 18,000 New Israeli Shekels (approx. 4,500 EUR), an amount that is updated from time to time in accordance with the budget of the city administration in the respective year.
