The Altstetten Cemetery is a cemetery in the Altstetten district in the west of Zurich . It is located between the Albisrieden and Eichbühl cemeteries .

history

The Altstetten cemetery was opened in 1908 and expanded to its current size in 1939. Even then, the then sole cemetery for the Altstetten district reached its limits. When there was another construction boom in the district after the Second World War , the city of Zurich planned to rebuild the adjacent Eichbühl cemetery from the 1950s, which provided relief for the older Altstetten and Albisrieden cemeteries as a much larger burial site. Because the population increase was not as high as forecast and today only urn burials take place at the Altstetten cemetery, it is less well documented today than in the middle of the 20th century.

Area and buildings

Like the neighboring cemeteries Albisrieden and Eichbühl, the alignment of the Altstetten cemetery runs on the axis from southeast to northwest due to its topographical location along the foothills of the Albis chain . In contrast to the two neighboring cemeteries, the main entrance to the Altstetten cemetery is on the northwest side. Through a wrought iron entrance gate in Art Nouveau style , the visitor arrives at an avenue that is planted with silver linden trees. This avenue leads to the former funeral hall, which is now used as an office building. Together with the communal grave in the roses behind it, the building forms the center of the cemetery. Continuing the avenue, visitors come from the service building to the higher-lying younger communal grave, from which a view over the neighboring houses to the city and the Limmat valley becomes clear. Behind this raised communal grave is a transverse terrace, under which the extension from 1939 joins in a south-easterly direction, which is a few meters lower. While the other paths in the cemetery are straight, a narrow, flat, curved path leads along the south-western boundary through a series of family graves.
