Herman de Wit (born April 8, 1932 in Amsterdam ; † July 10, 1995 ) was a Dutch jazz musician ( tenor saxophone ) who, as the founder of the teaching orchestras De Boventon and Oktopedians, made great contributions to the education of Dutch musicians. He also performed under the pseudonym Herbie White .

Live and act

De Wit was initially the leader of the big band of the Algemeen Nederlands Jeugd Verbond (communist youth association). Since the early 1960s he has held workshops in different parts of the Netherlands; The same pieces were practiced everywhere, so that there was sufficient staff for the big band thanks to the supraregional merger.

De Wit also played with Misha Mengelberg ; he has also performed with Sonny Rollins and Elvis Presley . In 1972 he founded his teaching orchestra Oktopedians in which young musicians every Thursday Jazz works aufführten (and is still carried on the still of Arthur Heuwekemeijer). He also worked with Willem Breuker , who brought him to his collection in 1974 . In the same year he founded the semi-professional teaching orchestra De Boventon , which alternates between jazz and new music , for which he was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize (together with the then co-director Willem van Manen ) . With the Orkest De Volharding he performed Louis Andriessen's work De Volharding . He also performed with his Herbie White Combo , which included musicians such as Guus Janssen and Maurice Horsthuis .

The documentary film Herbie White by Wouter Strip was made about him in 1990 , which was shown at the Amsterdam Documentary Film Festival in the same year and broadcast on Dutch television in 1991.
