Maurice Horsthuis
Maurice Horsthuis (born April 28, 1948 in Breda ) is a Dutch jazz and avant-garde musician and composer.
Horsthuis studied classical viola in Tilburg for four years and electroacoustic music at the Sonology Institute for one year . In 1972, under the impression of a concert by Loek Dikker , he began to be interested in jazz and in 1974 came through the Herbie White Combo in groups by Guus Janssen . He also worked with Leo Cuypers . Maarten Altena brought him to his K'Ploeng ensemble in 1977 , which also included Derek Bailey , Tristan Honsinger and Terry Day . It was a member of the Amsterdam String Trio (with Ernst Reijseger and Ernst Glerum ) and the ICP Orchestra . In 1990 he founded the Amsterdam Drama , an ensemble of 19 strings and vocalists, with whom he recorded the album of the same name in 1993 and performed his drama music.
Since 1979 he has composed theater music for the theater companies Baal and Globe and the Footsbarn Tea Theater . For the cellist Yo-Yo Ma he wrote Yo el rey , a work for two cellos and orchestra. He also directs the string octet Elastic Slang , for which he also composes.
